And the Winner is....Holla!

I am part of this cult... I mean group of friends who get together every year for an Oscar party/competition. This has been going on for 5 years and I was inducted into the group two years ago. (it's invitation only) Everyone takes this very seriously. I mean we are talking spreadsheets, months of research, grids, discussion groups, basically hard core out of control competition. This year it turned into a weekend event with game night, movie night, barbeque, share and prayer, and then the party. There was also months of trash talking through mass emails but I choose to exhibit a gentle and quiet spirit (for once) and save it for game night.

We had friends from OH and TX fly in just for the party. Last year, my first year, I took second place. This year Happy Hollie came in the winner! The winner, ME, won the Juno and Once cd, the book Atonement and movie tickets. I also got a fifth annual gift bag with lots of goodies and everone signed the scoreboard poster for me. It was a memorable night/ weekend!
I'll leave a piece of advice for all you hard corers out there (Jonathan, Dave, Becca, Paul and Joe)......Maybe Next Year!

*Today I am thankful for V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

*PS I think this makes me the Person of the Week....holla!

I love this song. It's called In Christ Alone. It's quickly become one of my favs!

In Christ alone my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my song;
this Cornerstone, this solid Ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone! who took on fleshFulness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousnessScorned by the ones he came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body layLight of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious DayUp from the grave he rose again!
And as He stands in victorySin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine -Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death,This is the power of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath.Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

*Today I'm thankful that Sarah (Ivy's babysitter) brought Ivy to see me yesterday. So fun and such a special treat.

Some more favorites...

Ivy and Katie Penberthy are two of my favorite girls. I love them and enjoy getting to love on them and spend time with them. Ivy is talking more and I call her daily just to see what interesting thing we can talk about. I love Kate! It's so cute as she thinks my name is "Holla" I love it! I've really gotten into skulls (Mom, hold the comment...) so I bought the girls these matching shirts at H&M when I was in Washington DC. I love this picture of them.

*Today I'm thankful for laughter with Tricia last night...I needed it!

Would You Rather Wednesday?!?!?!

Would you rather have a thick uni-brow or a uni-boob? Death is not an option. (things to consider....no surgery and no pluckage)

*Today I am thankful for the way the Lord constantly provides for me in ways I never expect.

Lesson Learned

I had to share my new purchase with everyone. I had been looking months for a nice picture for my dining room. I have a large wall and needed a good size picture for it.
Everything I liked was around $150-200. I didnt want to spend that much money so I thought why not find a cool print and just get it framed? I saw this print on art.com for $40 that I loved so I bought it. Then it came time to frame it.....WHO KNEW FRAMING COST SO MUCH?!?!?!

I went to three different places and it would cost well over $200 to get it framed. I finally settled on the cheapest place as I had a 50% off coupon but it was still only $30 cheaper then the next place without a coupon. The sales clerk excitedly told me I was saving over $200. I excitedly told him that I'm not an idiot and they jack the price up to make it appear like I'm getting a huge savings but reminded him it's not really a good deal. Now $275 later I have my picture. (to make it even worse I realized it would look better matted..it's staying the way it is!) Twenty years from now if you come to my house you will see this picture....it will be with me forever!

Couple of the Week: Jonathan and Jen Holmes

I love this couple. I wanted to highlight Jon and Jen as they are coming out for a visit this week. I hired Jonathan in the Admissions office almost four years ago. He worked for three years as our Campus Event Coordinator and then they moved to Ohio last June to take a position in a church. Jen worked for the college as a Resident Director for 3-4 years. They had a great ministry at the college and loved the students. I learned a lot from Jonathan during our 3 years together. He is wise beyond his years and does all things to the Honor and Glory of God. He went above and beyond for me and he was greatly loved and appreciated by everyone. He exemplifed servanthood.

One thing I love about Jen is she's a fun, spunky, wise leader who loved the girls at the college and invested so much time and energy into them. The times we got to spend together I realized how much we were alike and we shared a lot of favorites (Go Bon Jovi!) She was a great wife who loves her husband and looks for ways to love and serve him.

Jon and Jen I miss you and love you. What a blessing you are in my life. I am so thankful for you and your ministry not only here at TMC but in Ohio. God is using you in ways you never imagined and your faithfulness to Him in an encouragment to me. I am encouraged by your love for the Lord and one another. I look forward to seeing you this week!

Hollie is back in the hizzie! Since Tricia and I became roommates I've tried switching up my routine. The last three years I would work out between 3-4 days a week at 5:30 AM. Once I moved that no longer worked. Tricia is a night girl so I programmed myself to stay up later. This has been great because it has given me more time in the morning to do my quiet time. The Lord is blessing me and I've thoroughly enjoyed this time with Him. This week Tricia and I began our commitment to get back to the gym. We took a body sculpting class two days ago and I can feel the pain in my arms and legs....I enjoy it. Pain equals progress!
Last night I got to watch Ivy and my friend Lynn came with me. It was fun to let Ivy dress us up and play and then get to spend time with a close friend. I slept in until 9 AM....I was tired. I've been having some late nights. Tonight Tricia and I are going to a girls night out with some girls from Grace. It should be fun.

*Today I am thankful for the extra sleep I got.

I'm so spoiled and loved. These are just a few of the goodies I received yesterday for Valentine's Day. My morning started out with Lindsey coming over for breakfast. We meet once a week to encourage, love and grow in the knowledge of God. It was a sweet time. As soon as I got to work Ivy was waiting for me with some little goodies. My friends Gary, Voda, and Bette Lou had flowers for me. Sam and Noah sent me a sweet little gift. Then last night I went and spent the evening with Lamya and her two kids. She made a delicious meal, we put the kids to bed and had cheescake and coffee while watching Message in a Bottle. It was a great day. Once again I was reminded how good and faithful God is to me. He has abundantly blest me with people who love me and encourage me.
*Today I'm thankful for the ultimate gift of love...Jesus Christ.

Happy Birthday Sarah! I hope you have a wonderful day filled with love and gratitude. You have always been a bright spot in our office. Thanks for your friendship and faithfulness to me. I love you!

Happy Birthday brother! I've enjoyed our time together this year. You fit right into the family and I'm so glad you are here. You've kept me on my toes and I have enjoyed your spunky attitude. I love you Hampton and look forward to the next couple years with you!

Would You Rather Wednesday?!?!?!?!?!

Would you rather be 4 foot one inch short or be 7 feet 9 inches tall (and why)? Death is not an option?

*Today I am thankful that Ivy is beginning to feel better.

Last night I had the pleasure of having 10 college girls over for a night of food and fun. The Director of Women's Ministries at the college asked me to host a group of girls and it turned out to be a sweet time. Kathy Jenison (Associate Dean of Women) and my friend Heidi Keller hosted it with me. We made expresso's, ate desert and just got to know the girls better. It was fun hearing what they were learning and the impact the college has had on them. I've been given a great opportunity at the college and it's been a blessing in my life.

Person of the Week: Becca Gorsh (sista in law)

I Love my sister in law. I remember first meeting her when I was about 17 years old. She was the cousin of one of my friends. I remember running into her and telling her she needed to meet my brother and marry him. She was around 14 at that time. They started dating her sophomore year of high school and got married approximately 7 years later.

Our relationship has grown closer through the years and she is someone I have truly grown to love and appreciate. Becca is a great mom who loves her kids and I can tell that she really enjoys my brother. I love to see them interact and the fun that they have together. They truly love one another.

Becca, I apprecite you. I'm thankful you are part of my family. I'm thankful for the way you pursue me and check up on me. I appreciate the Godly advice you give me and the way I feel your care and love for me. I'm thankful that even though we live half way across the country you make sure I still have a relationship with your kids. I'm thankful for the way you love my brother and for raising my neices and nephew in a God honoring home. I LOVE YOU
SISTER!!!!

I have to mention this CD. It's really one of my favorites. I don't really dig a lot of talking in songs (i.e Boyz II Men) which Kirk Franklin likes to do and (and many times his editorial isn't biblically sound)but I really love this CD. There are a four to five songs on it where the music, words, and power of the song are of my liking. The following is another song on the CD that I love. If you can get passed Kirk's editorial then it's quite enjoyable.

Always
You know I’ve had some lonely days
I’ve made mistakes and had to pay
I’ve had some friends that walked away
Just like mama told me
But there’s someone whose love is real
Who cares about the way I feel
Every pain, and erase every stain
There’s peace when I call out your name

[Chorus]
Jesus, You’re my everything
The cross, You did that just for me
So whatever You take me through
I promise you
I’ll spend my always with you

No one can touch my heart like You
Or make me smile the way You do
I finally found someone who
Who really, truly loves me
And when my strength has come and gone
Your life in me it makes me strong
Your hand is where my heart belongs
You take all my pain and erased every stain
There's peace when I call out your name.

[Chorus]
Jesus, my whole life has changed
Since that day I cried Your name
For every time You’ve brought me through
I promise You
I’ll spend my always with You

*Today Im thankful for all the snuggles from Ivy last night.

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or vain conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests in others." Philippians 2:3-4

I have been thinking a lot the last week on what it means to lead in love. How should I be leading, responding, serving, and encouraging those in my office and those all around me? The Word says that the heart is wicked and I can say that is true of me. I can be loving, giving, and encouraging but I can also be selfish, prideful and unloving. I want to work on this! I want to exhibit Christ's characteristics which are love and humility.

For those of us who want to be leaders Christ said that we first need to be humble minded, not striving for a good reputation or prominence. He calls us to sacrifically forgive those who hurt us, serve one another, and to treat those in the family of God as brothers and sisters. All these things are summarized in one word....LOVE. God's self-giving love is not based on a person's worth or merit for we simply don't deserve it. john 13:34,25 "Love one another, as I have loved you, so you must also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples if you love one anohter."

I want to be one of love and humility. Hold me accountable to this my friends! When I start letting my mouth run (which happens way to often) and I'm not exhibiting love and humility please point it out to me. I want to love more, exhibit humility more and live Christ.

*Today I'm thankful for Chris H. and the time and energy he put into making our Admissions dinner last night a success!

Two of My Favorites....

Maryann and Lamya are two of my favorite most faithful friends. They constantly pursue me, pray for me, call to check up on me, and go out of their way to show me they love me. They are a huge undeserved blessing in my life! I Love you girls!

*Today I'm thankful for a sweet CD I was given. The artist is JR (Life in Stereo). I can't stop listening to it. I like it! Check him out.

Would You Rather Wednesday?!?!

Would you rather have a permenant smile on your face or have an uncontrollable twitching in your eye? Death is not an option. (things to consider: with a permenant smile if someone is telling you a heart wretching story you wouldn't appear sympathetic)

*Today I am thankful for friends who pursue me to hold me accountable.

Welcome Back Penberthy's

Last night I went out to dinner with my family and some close friends who just got back from overseas. We went to this fun little Japenesse resturant where they cook the dinner right in front of you. It was good. I got to know Wendy, Mike and their kids through my sister and Matt. They are best friends with Matt and Kelli and have become great friends of mine too. I love them!

Over the last two years I have gotten to spend quite a bit of time with Wendy and the kids and have come to love them a lot. Outside of my neices and nephews they are one of my favorites. Mike plays basketball overseas so when he's gone I spend a lot of time with them. Together Kelli and Wendy are a riot. (or out of control...however you want to look at it!) They are ALWAYS on me about something or someone but I know it's because they love me and want nothing but the best for me. They are truly my sistas!

I've missed you and am so glad you are back!

*Tdoay I'm thankful for a washer and dryer in my house.

I'm Back...

I made it back from the East Coast. I got in late last night and I'm gearing up for a big work week. We have a big event on Thursday and I have a lot of things I need to finalize for it. I know Monday's I usually highlight a special person in my life but I decided to take a week off. I got a virus on my computer last week so I can't access my pictures at this time and what's a person of the week without pictures?!?!

I'm reading through a book called "Agape Leadership." It's a mini biography on R.C. Chapman. He exemplified what it means to lead in love. I have been challenged and convicted while reading this book. It's a great reminder of how I need to love and serve those I work with. I want "Leading in Love" to be the way I approach all things. This requires a selfless attitude and alot of faith.

"If we act only because our path is clear of difficulty, this is not Faith. Faith acts upon God's Word whatever the difficulty; and to walk by faith brings highest glory to God."

*Today I am thankful for the Word of God that encourages my heart.

I'm getting ready to fly back to LA! It's been a good trip although I'm not feeling well. I started to get a sore throat, headache, and I'm feeling really worn out. I have a long day of travel ahead of me and then a busy week at work so I hope this is a temporary thing. Washington DC was sweet. It was cool to see the White house, the home where Lincoln got shot, the Capitol, Lincoln's memorial, Smithsonian, and a few other things. I'm ready for the CA sunshine.

*Today I'm thankful for having a safe trip.

God Bless America

I am digging the East Coast. It was beautiful yesterday morning and last night. I feel like all I did yesterday was eat and drive. We drove from Virgina Beach, to Annapolis and then on to DC. It was pouring rain for the majority of the drive so we were in the car from 12:30-7 (minus a lunch stop). I was getting antsy. I made Pete play "Hollie" games, took random pictures (see below) and I made Pete listen to "Love songs on the Coast with Delilah" Love it!!!

We spent the evening in Annapolis. It was really cute and quaint there. There were so many neat buildings. It reminded me of Santa Barbra or Solvang. We also went to the Naval Academy. The picture of me is in Annapolis by the water. They had little statues so I decied to get a picture with "Bob". I really do love the East Coast but I'm reminded of how blest I am in California too. It's definetly slower paced here. There are a lot of smokers here though! One more day and then I come home. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

*Today I'm thankful that I'm in Washington DC. Maybe I'll run into George!

Travels...

So it's not as cold as I thought it would be. It's nice breathing in cool CLEAN air. I love California but you don't always get the clean air there. I'm sitting at a Starbucks drinking a latte and trying to get some work done. Pete is at a conference on Rondald Regan today. Yesterday we spent the whole morning driving from the Baltimore area to Virgina Beach. The afternoon was spent at Regent University (think Pat Robertson). They have an amazing campus. It was beautiful. (The picture is Pete in front of their fountain which is the central point of campus) They have only been in existance since the late 70's. They have numerous graduate programs and started an undergrad program about 7 years ago. We toured the campus and stopped in to see their Admissions and looked at their marketing. Pete has been looking at going to their law school so we toured that as well.
This side of the country is beautiful. It's nice to see green land and places that aren't overtaken with houses and shopping. Pete is educating me on the history in these parts and I'm learning a lot about the FBI, CIA, and military.
Last night we went to dinner and then a movie. Pete suggested 27 dresses and that is what we saw. ( I wanted to see Rambo) It's been a good trip so far.

*Today I am thankful for internet at Starbucks!
